16 The Governor of Hongkong has telegraphed today to the Marquess of Ripon to the effect that the total mortality in the Colony from the Bubonic Plague up to date is 1900. The latest returns show an improvement. Ten British soldiers have been attacked, two have died, viz. Capt. Vesey and Private Gibbon, the others are convalescent. The departures from the Colony are approximately estimated at 80,000. The infected district has been closed. It seems that the plague, which is endemic in South China, broke out at Hongkong after a seven months' drought. The first foul bill of health was issued on the 10th of May. All steamer passengers are being medically examined.
